Enhance Your Home Practice

Listen, y'all- that home practice struggle is real, but now more than ever it's essential that we surrender to the flow (quite literally) instead of force ourselves against it. The truth? We have no idea what the future holds, but what we do know is that we've got our breath, we've got our bodies, we've got our practice. Every single time I've hit the mat during this global pandemic, it's been like a return to my home- familiar and cozy, necessary and divine.

Although we cannot wait to gather again in person to breathe, sweat, flow, and expand together, there is no telling when that time will come. And so, the greatest lesson we can turn to now is present moment living. Focus on the breath, surrender into your home practice, move every single day in some way- otherwise the energy becomes stuck and static, which is terrible for the immune system, nervous system, and mental wellbeing.

You truly don't need much (if you want to create a designated space/altar, enjoy our IGTV episode on the topic), just a great mat, supportive props, your body, and an open mind! Take your practice outside or enjoy a cozy space indoors- just allow it to be what it is- children, partners, pets, and dust-bunnies under the sofa are truly no joke... however, it has helped me to practice when the children are watching a movie and I've trained them (and my husband) to understand that when mama is practicing, I must not be bothered. It doesn't always happen this way, but the more I explain it and the more they see me practicing, the more disciplined we all become. We definitely still have our moments, but remember, the more you do anything, the more natural and ingrained it becomes- yes, even explaining to the people in your house that you may not be bothered for this one hour. THAT in itself becomes a practice... yoga is everywhere!

The hugest thing to remember is to resist the urge to FORCE anything... if the kids just really need you that day, let it be what it is and maybe invite them to practice with you, knowing that you'll get in a full practice tomorrow (especially if you wake up early, which is incredibly sacred anyway). Surrender, surrender, surrender...
